Painting Guide for Auson Pine Tar Paints & Pine Tar Oils
Coverage:
•Pigmented Pine Tar Paints: 5-8 m2/liter depending on the substrate. Very dry wood can result in a coverage that is 2-3 times greater.
•Pine Tar Vitriol, Unpigmented & Pigmented Pine Tar Oil: 6-10 m2/liter depending on the substrate. Very dry wood can result in a coverage that is 2-3 times greater.

Before You Paint
- Before painting, stir the can thoroughly. It’s fine to stir by hand, but if you use a shaker or electric stirrer, you should still always finish by stirring manually. This ensures that all the pigment is evenly mixed in the can.
- Paint when the temperature is at least 10°C, as the Pine Tar Product penetrates the substrate better and dries faster. Check the weather forecast – it should not rain either the days before or after painting.
- We recommend stainless steel nails for all colors except Black Brown Tar and Black Tar.
Galvanized nails can be damaged by mechanical impact and start to corrode. - It is advantageous to paint a layer before assembly, as an unpainted wood surface can quickly be attacked by fungal spores.
- Cover surfaces that should not be painted. Leave any covering plastic in place until the Pine Tar Product has started to dry on the surface.
- If you have a rough wood surface, you can start painting directly. For a new planed wood surface where you experience poorer penetration, we recommend thinning the product with 10–20% turpentine. T-sprit also works.
- If the wood has previously been painted with, for example, red distemper paint, start by removing loose paint with a wire brush or pressure washer. It is important to use mold wash to ensure no mold spores remain. Then preferably paint with the same color as before.
- Pine Tar Vitriol, Unpigmented & Pigmented Pine Tar Oil are ready to use as they are and should not be thinned regardless of the substrate.
- For new wood, it is important to make the first application with Auson Pine Tar Products as soon as possible. If the facade has been untreated for more than 4 weeks, you should wash it with mold wash to protect against mold attack. For new planed and pressure-treated wood that may have poorer penetration, we recommend either a thin layer of paint or waiting 1–2 years before treatment.
- Wood previously treated with tar or iron vitriol should always be washed with algae and mold wash and be completely dry before treatment. A pressure washer is recommended. The same applies to older untreated wood or heavily aged stained facades, possibly removing dead surface layers.
When You Paint
- The color may vary slightly depending on the batch number – see the label on the lid. If the cans have different batch numbers, you should check the colors. In case of any differences, mix the contents of the cans together to avoid color discrepancies. For Black Tar and Black Brown Pine Tar Paint, you do not need to worry about this.
- Use a wide brush, approximately 70–100 mm.
- Paint as with regular paint. Our Pine Tar Paints and Pine Tar Oils can also be applied with a paint sprayer, see separate guide online.
- Avoid painting thick layers, as this can create a hard-to-dry, lacquer-like surface. Instead, paint thinly and thin the paint further if necessary. It should penetrate completely into the substrate.
- Stir the Pine Tar Product regularly during painting to prevent the pigment from settling at the bottom.
- When painting for the first time with our Pine Tar Products, we recommend two coats for the best results, preferably in the same season. If 1-2 years pass between coats, the facade may need washing before applying the second coat. For new planed and pressure-treated wood that may have poorer penetration, we recommend either a thin layer of paint or waiting 1–2 years before treatment.
- Paint an entire board at a time to avoid color discrepancies and ensure an even surface. Also, paint an entire wall at a time to ensure a uniform result.
- Do not paint in direct sunlight for the best results.
After You Have Painted
- Our Pine Tar Products provide a long-lasting result. 6-8 years depending on the area of use. For example: A deck is more exposed than a facade. On sides where the wood is not as exposed, you can wait longer. Auson Pine Tar Paints and Pine Tar Oils serve two functions: they provide color while the tar penetrates the wood and helps prevent drying and cracking. On exposed surfaces, our Pine Tar Products are therefore particularly important.
The maintenance interval is extended the more times you paint with our products. Be aware that rags and paper can spontaneously combust and should be soaked in water immediately after use and disposed of in a fireproof place. This applies to our Pigmented Pine Tar Paints, Pigmented Pine Tar Oils, and Roslag mahogany.

Briefly about Auson Pine Tar Oil
Tired of discolored wooden decks? Auson Pine Tar Oil helps prevent the wood from drying out and thus starting to crack and absorb water. It also does not turn black over the years as conventional wood oils can, but preserves the deck’s gray hue while minimizing cracking. Our Pine Tar Oil provides durable protection and a stylish surface with a distinct wood pattern. The deck stays nice for a long time, and it is enough to treat the wood every 6-8 years depending on the area of use. For example: A deck is more exposed than a facade. The maintenance interval becomes longer with each layer of tar, as each coat provides increased protection. Our Pine Tar Oil also works excellently for fences, untreated wooden furniture, and pallet collars, as well as on facades where a non-covering surface is desired. Choose what suits your project best – Auson Pine Tar Oil with or without pigment.

How to Treat with Auson Pine Tar Oil
Important to Know!
Newly laid decking should not be treated directly with Pine Tar Oil but should be allowed to develop a bit of a surface before painting so that it penetrates more easily. Depending on the age of the wood, the Pine Tar Oil gives a golden/light gray color that fades over time. After exposure to UV radiation and weather, the wood returns to its natural
hue, while the protective properties remain.
Before You Start
Clean the surface thoroughly before starting the treatment. Use a pressure washer and detergent suitable for decks. In case of mold attack, use detergent/remover specifically designed for this. Ensure the wood is dry before treatment. Do not paint too early in the spring.
When You Paint
Use a brush, roller, or paint sprayer. Auson Pine Tar Oil easily penetrates the wood. Wipe off any excess on the surface. Be particularly careful with oil that remains on knots where the Pine Tar Oil may have difficulty absorbing – use a cloth soaked in turpentine or alcohol and wipe off as the deck is treated. Clean the brush with Auson balsam turpentine or T-sprit.
Coverage:
6-10 m2/liter depending on the substrate. Very dry wood can result in a coverage that is 2-3 times greater.
